courses taken degrees and certifications to-do list the plan |
A large portion of my time is wrapped up in going to college. I work full time, I have my karate classes, and everything else is wrapped in school. Right now, my school goal is simple: Get a baccalaureate degree in some programming-related field. Over the past couple years, I had been flip-flopping between a few different options. The University of Phoenix has a program that was enticing, but I decided not to go that route in preference of going to a more traditional, four-year institution. They just weren't what I was looking for. For a while, I was thinking of majoring in computer engineering or computer science, but I really detest the idea of spending two solid years studying calculus and physics just so I can do business, network, and web programming. Then I found the information systems programs. Both Chico and SJSU have IS programs that have more emphasis on computers than on science. Typically, they have little basis in science, and a lot of roots in business, which is fine. In fact, it's better than fine; I think this is ideal. Knowing more about business practice, I think, is going to be far more useful to me than "calc" or physics ever would be. I came to the decision not to go to Chico though. Their reputation isn't great, but more importantly, they are way the hell to far away from where I live. They do have a strong distance learning program, but it is more hassle then I want to deal with. So, after a couple years of investigating, SJSU's MIS program seemed to be the winner in my quest for a degree program. I have finally finished all of my general education and lower division classes at De Anza College and have transferred into SJSU as a junior. I still have a number of classes left to take, and by my calculations, it should take me several more years. However, thus far, I've found that I'm well prepared going into my classes and the stress load hasn't been overpowering. |
